Apple to launch its EV car in 2028

The iPhone smartphone maker Apple company is working on its next big project. Yes, you read that right, since 2014 Apple has been working on the electric car project which now has a launch delay. Reportedly, Apple will launch its first electric car in 2028, according to the Bloomberg report.

In 2024, there are several EV maker launched their electrical cars for example - TATA Motors in India launched the new TATA Punch EV, and the premium or luxury brand Rolls Royce introduced its first electric car the Spectre in India at the price tag of Rs. 7.5 cr. Tata Nexon EV Facelift launches in India at Rs. 14.74 lakh. Now, in 2024 there are several companies that are all set to bring new EV models which you can check over here.

When will the Apple EV car be launched?

Now coming back to the topic of the article, Apple is working on improving the design of its in-development electric vehicle. Apple product lovers need to wait a bit longer as the upcoming Apple EV car launch has been extended. According to media reports, the company has currently postponed the launch of Apple EV car to 2028. It is known that earlier there were reports of Apple Vehicle being launched in the year 2026.

Apple is going to present its upcoming vehicle as an autonomous vehicle without pedals and steering wheel.

Apple Car will come with Level 2+ system

As per the latest report from Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), Apple's vehicle will be operated with a Level 2+ system. With this system, the vehicle will be able to do autonomous lane centering and adaptive cruise control at the same time.

This tier is a few steps below Level 4 technology, with which the car can be driven autonomously in limited conditions. Apple's pivot on the project, codenamed Titan, was made after meetings of the company's board, CEO Tim Cook and project head Kevin Lynch.

Meanwhile, the iPhone maker is now working on forging partnerships with manufacturing firms in Europe to bring its scaled-back EV to market. The revised plan includes the possibility of introducing a Level 4 autonomous system in a later iteration of the vehicle, expanding its autonomy capabilities under specific conditions.

Earlier it was revealed that Kevin Lynch, Apple's Vice President, has been leading Project Titan since 2021, and under his guidance, Apple has adjusted its vision for the electric vehicle.

Apple car expected to offer limited autonomy features similar to those found in other electric vehicles, notably Tesla. The revised plan positions the Apple car as a Level 2+ system, requiring drivers to remain attentive and ready to take control, resembling Tesla's Autopilot system. Apple's upcoming car features are said to be downgraded from a Level 5 system (full automation) to a Level 4 system (full automation in some circumstances) — and now to a Level 2+ one (partial automation). That would mean it offers limited self-driving features like lane centering and braking / accelerating support — while still requiring the driver’s full attention.

For now the leading electric car company Tesla’s Autopilot is categorized as Level 2. Level 2+ isn’t an official designation, but it’s sometimes used informally to describe a more advanced version of Level 2.

Tesla plans to build new electric vehicles in mid-2025: Redwood

Tesla is now reportedly planning to build its new electric vehicles starting mid-2025. The company is looking to start production of a new mass market electric vehicle codenamed "Redwood" in mid-2025. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has recently confirmed that the company expects to start production of its next-generation EV at its Texas factory in the second half of 2025. That will be followed by Mexico and another factory outside North America to be decided later this year, he said, noting that ramping up production of the new vehicle would be challenging.

Those models, including an entry-level $25,000 car, would allow it to compete with cheaper gasoline-powered cars and a growing number of inexpensive EVs, such as those made by China's BYD. For your information, back in Q4 2023, BYD overtook Tesla as the world's top EV maker. Now, Tesla said the next-generation vehicle would drive a new wave of growth. "In 2024, our vehicle volume growth rate may be notably lower than the growth rate achieved in 2023, as our teams work on the launch of the next-generation vehicle at Gigafactory Texas," Tesla said in a quarterly results report.

Tesla officially sent the "requests for quotes," or invitation for bids for the "Redwood" model, to suppliers last year, and forecast weekly production volume of 10,000 vehicles, two of the sources said. Production would begin in June 2025, three of the sources said. Tesla is now reportedly working on two new products, with the potential for combined sales of 5 million vehicles a year.

"Both the design of the products and manufacturing techniques are head and shoulders above anything else that is present in the industry". Last but not least, Tesla also planning to bring an inexpensive robotaxi and an entry-level, $25,000 electric car based on the same vehicle architecture, according to Walter Isaacson's biography of Musk released in September 2023.
