USA electric car sales to increase

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the annual power consumption of light electric vehicles in the United States will exceed. As per the EIA, estimates of electric vehicle electricity consumption at the national, regional and state levels since 2018. It’s worth noting that these data were estimated through models rather than from traditional surveys (the EIA has also pointed out that the models have errors and they are working to improve them).

 The federal agency said that since 2003, railroads' annual electricity consumption has been the transportation industry's largest end-use category in its Monthly Electricity Reports. Railway electricity consumption has remained stable over the past two decades, averaging around 7,000 GWh. 

In 2023, U.S. electric vehicle sales will account for 16% of all light vehicle sales. It is estimated that the annual power consumption of electric vehicles will increase to 7596 GWh in 2023, nearly five times that of 2018. In 2018, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) consumed roughly the same share of electricity. 

California has the highest electric vehicle ownership among all states in the United States, and the state’s electric vehicle power consumption also ranks first among all states in the United States. In 2023, California’s electric vehicle consumption accounted for 33.9% of the U.S. electricity consumption, followed by Florida at 6.0%.
