Uber to buy 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs for its robotaxi fleet
Lucid announced that its Gravity SUV will be joining Uber’s fleet of autonomous robotaxis. Expect to see the first autonomous Gravity units “later next year in a major US city”.
Lucid and Uber are working together to roll out self-driving cars for Uber rides.
- Lucid’s Gravity SUV will soon become part of Uber’s robotaxi (self-driving taxi) group.
- The first self-driving Gravity SUVs will be on the road later next year in a big US city. The city’s name has not been shared yet
Big Plans for the Future
- Uber wants to add at least 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs to its global robotaxi service in the next six years.
- These cars will drive themselves using Nuro’s “Level 4” self-driving system, which means the cars can mostly drive on their own without human help
Why Use Lucid Gravity?
Lucid says its Gravity SUV is great for self-driving taxis because it uses advanced technology. The car can drive long distances on a single charge, so it spends less time stopped for charging. This helps keep cars available for riders.
The special self-driving hardware will be added to the Gravity SUVs during their production at the Lucid factory. When Uber receives the cars, they will add Nuro’s self-driving software.
A test version of the self-driving Lucid Gravity is already driving itself at a test track in Las Vegas. Uber is putting hundreds of millions of dollars into both Lucid and Nuro to make this robotaxi plan happen.
